1 Corinthians 12:4–30

Gifted on Purpose

A guided exploration of spiritual gifts—what they are, how they work together, and how God equips His people to serve the body of Christ.

God did not give us spiritual gifts simply so we could discover something interesting about ourselves. He gives gifts on purpose—to serve, encourage, strengthen, and love His people well. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul compares the Church to a body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you,” because every part has a different role and every part matters. The body works as God intended when its many parts work together. In the same way, imagine what God can do when a whole group of people brings their different gifts together—one leading, another teaching, another serving, encouraging, organizing, giving, showing mercy, or walking in faith. We were never meant to do all of it alone. Spiritual gifts also do not have to fit neatly into one little box. You may recognize one gift strongly in yourself, but that does not make it your only important gift—or mean you need to rank the rest as second or third. Gifts can overlap and strengthen one another. A leader may also be gifted in administration. A teacher may be a strong encourager. Someone with mercy may naturally serve. As you explore each gift, look for the ways God may have woven several of them together in you. This study is not about finding a label. It is an invitation to dig into Scripture, notice how God used people in many different ways, and better understand how He can use you as part of His body. And through it all, keep looking to Jesus. He is our greatest example of a life poured out for others—serving, teaching, leading, loving, and always pointing people back to God. You are gifted on purpose—but never just for yourself. When you’re ready, explore the gifts one at a time. You do not need to move through every gift in one sitting.

Before You Explore

Three things to keep in mind

Gifts are given for others.

God equips us to strengthen, serve, encourage, and build up His people.

You may recognize more than one.

Spiritual gifts can overlap and work together. You do not need to rank them.

We need one another.

No one person carries every gift. The body works when its different parts work together.

The Spiritual Gifts

Choose a gift to explore its meaning and biblical examples. You can move through them in order or return whenever you want—there is no need to read all of them in one sitting.

Different gifts can work together in one life.

Pause & Reflect

What might God be showing you?

You do not have to leave this study with your spiritual gifts perfectly figured out. Take a moment to notice what stood out, where you have already seen God at work, and what you may want to keep exploring.

1

What gifts did you recognize in yourself?

Where have you already seen God using these gifts in your relationships, church, family, work, or everyday life?

2

Were there gifts you had not considered before?

Which ones made you curious or helped you see yourself differently?

3

What gifts do you recognize in the people around you?

How have their gifts strengthened, encouraged, taught, or supported you?

4

What could it look like to use what God has given you more intentionally?

Is there one small way you could serve, encourage, lead, teach, give, help, or love someone this week?

Want to go a little deeper?+

• Is there a gift you may have overlooked because it comes naturally to you?

• Is there a gift you admire in someone else but do not necessarily need to possess yourself?

• Where might God be inviting you to grow rather than simply stay where you are comfortable?

• Who could you ask, “Where do you see God using me?”

You were gifted on purpose—but you were also gifted as part of a body.

The goal is not to discover the most important gift. It is to faithfully use what God has given you while making room for what He has given others.

Your Story Matters

What has this looked like in real life?

Spiritual gifts rarely stay neatly inside one box. They show up in our families, friendships, churches, workplaces, communities, and sometimes in places we never expected.

Maybe several gifts seem to overlap in your life. Maybe someone else recognized a gift in you before you did. Or maybe something you thought was simply part of your personality, profession, or role now looks different to you.

Rooted Reflections is beginning to collect real-life stories about how God uses ordinary people and their gifts in everyday life. Your experience may someday help someone else recognize the way God has gifted them.
